“Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit with Marie Curie” Film Screening and Discussion Encourages Support of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

WHAT:

The Office of Women’s Policy is celebrating women in STEM with a free public pre-screening and discussion of Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit with Marie Curie. The 40-minute film highlights the life and work of two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, best known for pioneering the field of radioactivity—including the discovery of one of the first successful radiation treatments for cancer, despite the obstacles she faced as a female scientist.

The film will be followed by an informative and inspiring panel discussion featuring film director Jen Myronuk, a San Jose native and former member of the Commission on the Status of Women of Santa Clara County.

WHY:

While women make up nearly half of the workforce, only 26 percent of the workers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are women, according to the Labor Department. STEM jobs typically have lower levels of unemployment and higher wages, even among STEM jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree. Movement of women into higher paying STEM jobs can help narrow the overall wage gap between women and men.

ABOUT THE FILM:

Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit with Marie Curie invites audiences of all ages to time travel and meet Marie Curie as she recollects her quest to isolate two elements — polonium and radium. From her childhood in Poland to groundbreaking research in France, Dr. Curie shares the struggles, failures and triumphs behind her scientific discoveries and remarkable collaboration with companion scientist and husband Pierre Curie.
