Community Reception for “Still. I Rise.” Art Exhibit
Celebrating the Artistic Expressions of the Women of Elmwood Correctional Facility
WHAT:
The County of Santa Clara Office of Reentry Services, Office of the Sheriff, Office of Women’s Policy and nonprofit Carry the Vision invite the media to attend a community reception featuring the artwork and expressions of the women of Elmwood Correctional Facility. Local nonprofit Carry the Vision works with Reentry clients, jails, schools and work places to promote nonviolence and share the tools for building compassionate communities. The Office of Reentry Services and the Office of the Sheriff collaborate with Carry the Vision to provide its Restore Life Skills programming to individuals, both in and out of custody. Carry the Vision participants practice meditation, restorative breathing, relaxation techniques, dialogue process, Hatha Yoga, journaling and other methods for increasing well-being. Carry the Vision and Father Robert Barcellos, a local artist who led the art exercise, coordinated the artwork on display for this reception.
The “Still. I Rise.” artwork will be displayed through the month of March in the County of Santa Clara Government Building Breezeway. Program coordinators, County leaders and community members will comment on the project at the reception. Light refreshments will be served.

WHY:
The purpose of the art exhibit is to shine light upon incarcerated women, by providing a platform for their voices to be heard through self-expression. During the process of creating the artwork, the women of Elmwood wrote about pain, transformation and possibility.
