County Executive to Provide Update on County Response to SEIU Strike and Labor Negotiations, October 3
WHAT:
County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., J.D., will provide an update on County services and current labor negotiations with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 521, in response to the SEIU work stoppage occurring today at several County of Santa Clara facilities.
“The County’s priority is to continue to provide essential services to our community, not to make a profit. The County’s healthcare system and social services programs serve some of the most vulnerable residents in our community,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., J.D. “The County’s proposal for SEIU employees provides a fair wage and an equitable contract that will allow the County to sustain services for those who need them most.”

WHY:
The County will continue to negotiate in good faith, but SEIU’s latest proposals are unsustainable in light of projected revenues and a slowing economy. The County maintains a website dedicated to labor relations updates, including the most recent negotiations with SEIU on September 27, 2019.
The County and SEIU have been in labor negotiations for the past five months. Although the SEIU Local 521 contract expired on June 16, 2019, the County has continued negotiations with SEIU, and is observing all contract terms and conditions.
