Board of Supervisors to Hold Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Budget Hearing Sessions Starting June 12

WHAT:

At budget hearings beginning Monday, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors will review County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith’s Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2017-2018, which begins July 1, and by Friday, make final decisions about the funding priorities and levels for County services. The recommended $6.5 billion budget includes all services, operations, capital improvements and reserves. The County Executive’s Recommended General Fund Budget is $3.4 billion, which covers all discretionary and many mandated services for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2017.

The County Executive is asking the Board of Supervisors to continue investing in essential services as well as address urgent service needs. Key issues include improving correctional facilities and programs; providing support for homeless programs and creating affordable housing; supporting whole person care for our clients most in need; continuing to build back the County's infrastructure; and building in reserves to protect the County from federal and state economic threats and uncertainties such as the federal budget and repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The budget hearing sessions, which follow the May workshops where Board members reviewed the Budget recommendations, are the public’s second opportunity to engage and comment on the planned allocation of resources before the Board of Supervisors approves the final budget on June 16.
