Community Partners Call on Residents to Help Stamp Out Hunger® in Santa Clara County on May 13

Letter Carriers, Second Harvest Food Bank and County of Santa Clara Encourage Community Participation in Food Drive May 13

WHAT:

Hunger exists in our community all year, not just during the holidays when many communities are seeking donations through food drives. The Second Harvest Food Bank, National Association of Letter Carriers, and the County of Santa Clara are encouraging the community to participate in the Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive on May 13 to help combat hunger in Santa Clara County.

Residents can participate in the food drive by leaving grocery bags of non-perishable food donations next to their mail boxes before letter carriers deliver mail on Saturday, May 13.  Nonperishable Items in cans, boxes and other non-breakable containers are preferred. All donations will go to Second Harvest Food Bank and local organizations helping to feed our community.

This week, May 8-12, County employees have supported the food drive by bringing in donations to Second Harvest food barrels at the County Government Center.

WHO:

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, 19th District

Jeff Smith, County Executive

Branch President Ernie Arranaga, National Association of Letter Carriers

Bernadette White, Community Relations Coordinator, Second Harvest Food Bank

WHEN:

May 12, 2017, 11 a.m.

WHERE:

County Government Center (First Floor Breezeway, East Wing side)

70 W. Hedding St., San Jose

WHY:

The Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, celebrating 25 years, is the nation’s largest one-day food collection event designed to help replenish local food banks in the communities we serve. Nearly 49 million Americans—1 in 6—are unsure where their next meal is coming from. This includes 13 million children as well as about 5 million seniors over age 60—many of whom live on fixed incomes and often are too embarrassed to ask for help.
