County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors to Hold FY 2018-2019 Budget Workshop Sessions beginning May 21

County Executive’s Recommended Budget focuses on expanding high-quality services to residents while preparing for an uncertain future

WHAT:

At budget workshop sessions beginning May 21, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors will review and discuss County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith’s Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2018-2019, which begins in July. County administration will present recommended budget changes during the workshop sessions for the coming fiscal year (see schedule below).

The Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19, a decade after the Great Recession, proposes spending of almost $7 billion to continue strengthening the organization. The budget focuses on technology investment, facility upgrades, expansion of healthcare services, improved social services, jail custody improvements and enhancements to the County park system. The budget also adds to reserves to protect against anticipated Federal and State budget cuts.

“We are taking a prudent approach to spending for the coming fiscal year because of an uncertain world and the ongoing and growing needs of our clients,” said County Executive Jeff Smith. “We are protecting services for the most vulnerable in our community, while expanding services to meet the increasing demand.”

The recommended $6.98 billion budget includes all services, operations, capital improvements and reserves. The County Executive’s recommended General Fund budget is $3.5 billion, which covers all discretionary and many mandated services for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018.

The budget workshop sessions in May are the public’s early opportunity to engage and comment on the planned allocation of resources. In June, budget hearing sessions will be held where the Board of Supervisors will make final decisions on the budget.
