County of Santa Clara Office of Immigrant Relations and City of San José Office of Immigrant Affairs Host Media Roundtable on Myth Busting the Public Charge

County and City are committed to share and clarify information

WHAT:

The County of Santa Clara Office of Immigrant Relations and the City of San José Office of Immigrant Affairs will host an Ethnic Media Roundtable to demystify the proposed changes to “public charge,” share the latest information from subject matter experts, and provide resource guides for media regarding this issue.

“Public Charge” is a term used in immigration law to refer to a person who is likely to become primarily dependent on the government to meet his or her basic needs.

Panelists include representatives from the County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency and Bay Area Legal Aid. Media will have the opportunity to ask questions, gain further understanding and clarification, and receive additional informational support from the County and the City.

WHY:

The County of Santa Clara Office of Immigrant Relations and the City of San Jose Office of Immigrant Affairs are committed to sharing information regarding changes that can potentially impact immigrant communities. Assumptions about the proposed changes to the public charge has created wide spread fear and confusion in the community. According to the Migration Policy Institute, the number of noncitizen residents in Santa Clara County that may be impacted if the proposed changes goes into effect would only increase by 2%. The goal of this roundtable is to provide facts, bust myths, and support ethnic media in busting incorrect assumptions about the potential impacts of the proposed changes.
