County of Santa Clara Update Regarding Shooting at Valley Transportation Authority: Medical Examiner-Coroner Releases Suspect Autopsy Findings

Santa Clara County, CA The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner has completed the autopsy of the suspect in the Valley Transportation Authority Maintenance Yard shooting that occurred on May 26. The Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office is releasing the cause and manner of death for Samuel James Cassidy, age 57:

Cause of death:         Multiple gunshot wounds of the head

Manner of death:      Suicide

The autopsy concluded that the manner of death was suicide, and the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds of the head. Although rare, this can occur in suicides in which the first shot to the head was not immediately fatal. The Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office is providing the cause and manner of death findings following a thorough crime scene investigation and autopsy.

The staff and leadership of the Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office and the entire County of Santa Clara leadership extend their deepest condolences to the victims’ families, VTA family, and individuals impacted by this senseless tragedy.
